Overview

The Power Electronics Engineer – Inverter is responsible for analysis, design, validation and troubleshooting of traction inverter components and assembly. 

Responsibilities

  • Develop models of inverter components and their control methods to understand electrical and thermal stress levels. 
  • Specify and size power stage components of traction inverters, including power modules, dc link capacitors, busbars, etc. 
  • Analyze component stresses in different operation modes to provide guidance to size components, design experiments and root-cause lab and field failures. 
  • Design validation methods to verify component specification and inverter performance. 
  • Conduct validation tests on components and inverter assembly levels to verify. 
  • Review designs and validation results with the team. 

Qualifications

  • Effective communication skills of technical details. 
  • Good judgement in task-prioritization and project management. 
  • Typically requires 3 years of power electronics development experience. 
  • Minimum requires M.Sc. degree with 2 years industry experience or Ph.D. degree, in the field of power electronics. 
  • Experience with developing high voltage power converters, preferably >100 kW traction inverter for 400 V or 800 V battery electrical vehicles. 
  • Good understanding of Si or SiC or GaN power semiconductor characteristics and their gate driver design. 
  • Experience determining electrical and thermal stress of power electronics components. 
  • Good understanding of pulse width modulation method. 
  • Experience with digital control implementations for three phase power converters.  
  • Knowledge of three phase permanent magnet motor control is preferred. 
  • Experience simulating circuit and physics models, using tools such as PLECS, Simulink, COMSOL, ANSYS.  
  • Proficiency with programming, such as Python or Matlab, for data processing. 
  • Proficiency with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, programmable power supplies, function generators, power analyzers, and electronic loads
