About Canoo

Canoo’s mission is to bring EVs to Everyone and build a world-class team to deploy this sustainable mobility revolution. We have developed breakthrough electric vehicles that are reinventing the automotive landscape with pioneering technologies, award-winning designs, and a unique business model that spans all owners in the full lifecycle of the vehicle. Canoo is starting production in 2022 and is distinguished by its pioneering and experienced team of technologists, engineers, and designers. With offices around the country, the company is scaling quickly and seeking candidates who love to challenge themselves, are motivated by purpose, and possess a strong desire to get things done.

The “Canoo Way”

Canoo’s success is the direct result of our disciplined application of our core operating principles and drills, which are based on three main principles: Think 80/20 (“Important versus less important”), Act 30/30 (“Reduce waste and increase output”), and Live 90/10 (“We have each other’s back”). We hire based on “MET” - Mindset, Equipment and willingness to Train - and seek individuals that take accountability and deliver results while being Humble, Hungry to succeed, and Hunting for opportunities to win. We train our team to engage with each other by modulating between their intellect (iQ) and emotional intelligence (eQ), applying Facts, Finesse, and Force when they communicate. The principles and drills of the CANOO Way have been fundamental to our success, our ability to grow, continuously improve, innovate and are at the core of our day-to-day operations.

Your code can keep millions of tons of C02 out of our atmosphere. If you want to help create the future of mobility with an exceptional, world-class team pushing the envelope of what’s possible with electric vehicles, we’re looking for a range and efficiency simulation engineer to help take us to the next level at Canoo. You will take on key responsibilities of ensuring that complex models of vehicle performance are as accurate, flexible, automated, and useable as possible to help inform major engineering and program decisions, as well as help our team integrate control strategies for different features. You’ll work with a diverse group of people involved in controls, battery, powertrain, thermal, aerodynamics, chassis, studio, as well as marketing and management. You’ll be strongly encouraged to come up with inventive ideas, and push for technical excellence from the teams and individuals you work with.

  • Undertake exploratory and optimization studies to create data across dozens of inter-related variables, including evaluating new technology and innovations aimed at extending vehicle range
  • Help to develop range modelling, including the ongoing development of vehicle Matlab/Simulink models that capture component and system behavior based on collaborative inputs from many teams
  • Define data collection specifications for test plans to generate model correlation data
  • Parallelize code and implement automation approaches to generate large datasets, which you will then use to develop pro-active, predictive approaches to range and efficiency analysis
  • Collaborate with attribute ownership teams on studies to support program development.
  • Undertake regular rigorous mathematical review of fidelity and accuracy as models develop
  • Help to create effective visualizations and presentations to convey complex information to a range of different audiences including Attribute owners, upper management, and Chief Engineers.
  • Source and use broader information on cost, mass, and timing impacts of potential changes to facilitate multi-faceted analysis of range data, helping attribute and component

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Python experience a bonus.
  • Demonstrated expertise in uncertainty analysis
  • Excellent visual and oral communication skills in particular, catering to a variety of different audiences with an organization.
  • Experience with industry standard energy & efficiency analysis & simulation tools and methodology, coupled with strong understanding of technologies and enablers for range and efficiency
  • Good organizational, planning, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Effective team player with internal and external resources.

  • BS + 5 years industry, MS+ 2 years, or PhD in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or related areas.
  • Specific demonstrated multi-year expertise with Matlab for creating or modifying models of automotive systems, with >2yrs experience working on electrified or electric vehicles.
  • Experience with modeling control systems
  • Experience with industry standard test cycles and test methodologies for range and efficiency
  • Understanding of “design of experiments” approaches, as well as more advanced methods for multi-dimensional optimization and design space exploration - experience with machine learning techniques considered a strong plus
  • Exposure to vehicle and system level testing and range testing standards preferable – knowledge or experience of automotive standard modelling/simulation approaches in different technical areas will also be well regarded

What's Cool About Working Here...

  • Meaningful, challenging work that will redefine automotive landscape and make EVs available to everyone
  • Comprehensive Health Insurance
  • Equity Compensation
  • Flexible Paid Time Off
  • Casual workplace with an unbelievable feeling of energy
