The Principal Materials & Joining Engineer will own materials and joining technical development for the Body Structures Engineering departments (Frame, Cabin, Closures, Accessories) from early conceptual work through start of production and beyond. Define and document the material and production process requirements, DFMEA and DVP&Rs. Collaborate with other engineering and manufacturing departments to support the vehicle program.


Responsibilities (80s of the Position) 

  • Lead the development of joining processes, materials, and coatings for the Canoo body structures team.
  • Develop and document requirements, boundary diagrams, DFMEA and DVP&Rs for associated materials and joining processes.
  • Define and write material and joining specifications.
  • Support all phases of the development and validation for materials and joining.
  • Lead material and joining technologies characterization through testing
  • Support the CAE team in validating and correlating their model through testing
  • Support design for quality activities on site during build events
  • Participate and support all design reviews and build reviews


Required Experience 

  • Masters or PHD in Materials Science, Welding and Joining, or similar Engineering Disciplines
  • 8-12+ years of BiW materials and joining product development experience
  • History of successfully developing new materials and joining processes for automotive OEMs from investigation through development and validation.
  • Good knowledge of BiW architecture and construction
  • Understanding of vehicle manufacturing requirements
