Lead and grow organization to design, develop, implement and validate a competitive Electric drive unit for consumer and fleet vehicle applications. Institute standardized product development methods and processes to ensure smooth launches. Set product strategies and technology roadmap.


Must be willing to work onsite at one of our locations in Michigan, Oklahoma, Arkansas, or Texas.


Responsibilities (80s of the Position) 

  • Grow engineering team capabilities in the design and development of electric drive unit (eMotor + Gearbox + Inverter). Lead with aggression, guile and decisiveness.
  • Develop long term roadmap and strategy for Canoo’s electric drive unit, with resource and financial needs.
  • Maintain deep supplier relationships with key strategic suppliers for electric drive unit and subcomponents (e.g., eMotor, Gearbox, park lock, resolver etc)
  • Evaluate, benchmark OEM supplier technology roadmaps and formulate proof points to gauge Canoo’s competitive posture.
  • Create and maintain internal Canoo’s powertrain platforms and vehicle use case roadmap
  • Advise Canoo executive management on matters of electric drive unit
  • Up to 25% domestic travel


Required Experience

  • Master’s degree in Electrical and/or Mechanical engineering
  • 5 or more years leading engineering in electric drive unit development or applications
  • Strong current network of contacts within the relevant hardware and software supply community.
  • Executive presence to succinctly report status and recommendations for action.
  • Experience creating and executing electric drive unit development and validation test plans.
  • Up to date with current trends of motor technologies and subcomponents – Electrical steel, magnet wire, magnet, position sensor, gearbox etc.

 Preferred Experience 

  • Phd In Electrical and/or Mechanical engineering
  • Experience with automotive standards for high voltage electronics
  • Experience with ISO26262 standards and due care criteria
  • Experience with structural and thermal simulation tools

Salary will be determined based on a number of factors, including but not limited to years of experience, training, skillset, location, etc.  Expected salary range – $152,300 - $190,400
