The Functional Safety Engineer owns and manages the functional safety activities based on ISO 26262 for various systems of the Canoo vehicle for serial production.  In this role, you will be working closely with systems, hardware, and software engineering teams to deliver on Canoo vehicle programs. 


Remote work opportunity but candidates must reside within the state of Michigan, Oklahoma, Arkansas, California, or Texas and be willing to work onsite at one of our locations as needed to be considered.


  • Lead Functional Safety analyses of one or more Canoo vehicle systems
  • Work with multi-functional teams to develop Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), Safety Concepts, DFMEA and other functional safety work products for the relevant systems.  Get consensus from system owners, follow through the validation process
  • Work closely with internal teams and external partners/suppliers to define Functional Safety interfaces and review & approval of relevant work products
  • Develop Functional Safety Verification & Validation test plans and support the execution of tests in coordination with respective Canoo test teams
  • Contribute to development of Functional Safety processes and tools tailored to Canoo’s engineering development processes, support the implementation of these processes and tools within the organization
  • Lead or participate in reviews of functional safety process work products
  • Promote Canoo’s safety culture internally and externally 



  • BS - Electrical/Mechanical/Computer Science or equivalent degree
  • 3-5+ years of related engineering experience
  • Demonstrated experience executing processes and delivering work products for assessment, analysis, definition, verification, and validation of safety critical systems 
  • Exposure to and familiarity with implementing Functional Safety and System Safety practices on complex, software-intensive systems (e.g., ISO-26262, ISO-21448, IEC-61508, MIL-ST 882E, etc.)
  • Knowledge of requirements management & safety analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS Medini, Polarion, PTC Integrity, DOORS, etc.)


  • 5+ years of working in systems, functional safety, or other safety-critical engineering positions
  • Functional Safety Certification or equivalent
  • Experience in working on ISO 26262 processes and compliance for automotive vehicles 
  • Experience in evaluating and ensuring functional safety & process compliance
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering methods
  • Experience in quality and process frameworks (e.g., SPICE, CMMI, ISO-9001, etc.)
