About Canoo

Canoo’s mission is to bring EVs to Everyone and build a world-class team to deploy this sustainable mobility revolution. We have developed breakthrough electric vehicles that are reinventing the automotive landscape with pioneering technologies, award-winning designs, and a unique business model that spans all owners in the full lifecycle of the vehicle. Canoo is starting production in 2022 and is distinguished by its pioneering and experienced team of technologists, engineers, and designers. With offices around the country, the company is scaling quickly and seeking candidates who love to challenge themselves, are motivated by purpose, and possess a strong desire to get things done.

The “Canoo Way”

Canoo’s success is the direct result of our disciplined application of our core operating principles and drills, which are based on three main principles: Think 80/20 (“Important versus less important”), Act 30/30 (“Reduce waste and increase output”), and Live 90/10 (“We have each other’s back”). We hire based on “MET” - Mindset, Equipment and willingness to Train - and seek individuals that take accountability and deliver results while being Humble, Hungry to succeed, and Hunting for opportunities to win. We train our team to engage with each other by modulating between their intellect (iQ) and emotional intelligence (eQ), applying Facts, Finesse, and Force when they communicate. The principles and drills of the CANOO Way have been fundamental to our success, our ability to grow, continuously improve, innovate and are at the core of our day-to-day operations.

Overview

Job Purpose

If you are passionate about your work making a real difference, and you want to help create the future of mobility alongside an exceptional team pushing the envelope of what's possible with electric vehicles, we're looking for an outstanding aerodynamics engineer like you. Our growing Aerodynamics & NVH team seeks a highly motivated, well-rounded individual with applied industry experience in automotive aerodynamics – comfortable in both CFD and wind tunnel, and with a talent for developing innovative ways to overcome challenging constraints!

Responsibilities

80s of the Position

  • Focus on optimization of aerodynamic resistance of electric vehicles for EPA test
    conditions and general use.
  • Design, simulate and test geometries on vehicles to ensure better aerodynamic performance for range and efficiency purposes as well as stability at high speeds. Propose inventive and effective solutions to tricky challenges with teams across the board – often coming at problems from first principles or with ideas from disparate areas of fluid dynamics.
  • Develop detailed CAD from scratch or adapt CAD from others, to pre-process for CFD, 3d printing, and fabrication.
  • Setup, mesh and run CFD simulations on local and cloud platforms, including job automation and scripting post-pro, applying non-traditional data analysis tools in post-processing.
  • Collaborate with other teams to provide insight, data, and feedback on various aspects of thermal performance, water management, aeroacoustics, structural response to pressure loads, and more.
  • Take the initiative on planning and executing aspects of track, road testing, and wind tunnel programs – and pass on knowledge and skills to more junior team members.
  • Over time become a trusted and respected voice in the company advocating for outcomes andresources that lead to increased vehicle efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace
Engineering, Aerodynamics or a related technical field. 2 years of experience in
aerodynamic optimization of mass market electric vehicles.
  • 2 years of experience designing, simulating and testing structures on electric vehicles to ensure better aerodynamic performance.
  • 2 years of experience delivering on optimization goals for wind noise and soiling/water management of devices for indirect vision and different levels of autonomous driving.
  • 2 years of experience utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to
simulate, analyze and interpret the behavior of air in and around the vehicle.
  • 2 years of experience performing testing and correlation studies between computer simulations and wind tunnel results to understand how these results affect design processes of aerodynamics structures.
  • 2 years of experience with thermodynamics relating to vehicle cooling modules.
  • 2 years of experience with fluid dynamics R&D, including OpenFoam (Elements) + Paraview, Powerflow, and STAR-CCM+.
  • 2 years of experience with physical aerodynamic and/or fluid dynamic testing, including coast-down, full-scale wind tunnel with moving belt, and pressure transducer instrumentation.
  • 2 years of experience with Matlab-based simulation and modeling including Simulink.
  • Experience developing active flow approaches for aerodynamic improvements
